Installation
Specimen is distributed as a standard macOS application.
- Download the latest version from the download page
- Open the downloaded
.zip file
- Unzip the archive and drag Specimen to your Applications folder
- Launch Specimen from Applications or Spotlight
Note: Specimen requires macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later and runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
First Launch
When you first launch Specimen, it automatically scans your system for installed fonts. This may take a few moments depending on how many fonts you have.
During the initial scan, Specimen builds caches for writing system support, language support, foundry information, and license type detection.
Once complete, you'll see all your fonts displayed in the main view. The sidebar on the left provides quick access to different categories and collections.
Interface Overview
Specimen's interface consists of three main areas:
Sidebar (Left)
Navigate between views: All Fonts, Favorites, Recents, and your custom collections. Browse by font type, writing system (10 scripts), language (24 languages), license type, or foundry.
Main View (Center)
Browse fonts in Grid, List, or Carousel view. The toolbar provides search, view mode switching, and filter controls. The status bar at the bottom customizes preview text, size, and background.
Inspector (Right)
View detailed font information including live preview, all styles, glyph map, metadata, variable font controls (when applicable), and copy-as-code options.
Tip: Toggle the sidebar with ⌘1 and the inspector with ⌥⌘I.
